As a proud member of the NSW Department of Education Digital Skills and Workforce Compact 5, The Careers Department is committed to helping students build the skills, confidence, and awareness needed to thrive in the future workforce.
In Term 4 of 2025, students from Gosford High School and Cumberland High School took part in an immersive digital design workshop built around our UX/UI Virtual Work Experience module.
Throughout the workshop, students stepped into the role of digital designers, exploring what it’s like to work in technology and product development. Using Figma, students worked through real-world design activities including:
- Mapping user flows
- Creating wireframes
- Designing interactive prototypes
- Learning the foundations of UX and UI design
One of the most powerful outcomes of the day was seeing how quickly exposure to industry-linked learning can shift students’ understanding of career opportunities in technology.
Before the workshop, only 7% of participating students recognised the term “product or UX designer.” By the end of the day:
- 92% of students said they enjoyed the skills they learnt
- 64% reported the experience increased their interest in a career in technology
These results reinforce why introducing students to emerging industries and career pathways early is so important — particularly before they make key subject selection and post-school pathway decisions.
At The Careers Department, we believe students shouldn’t choose a future they haven’t experienced. Through hands-on, industry-connected learning experiences, we aim to make career exploration engaging, practical, and accessible for every student.
A huge thank you to Nivanthi Reji, Bernadette Carpenter, Jane Artup, Peter Davis, and Nigel Palmer for all of your hard work behind the scenes in making this opportunity possible for students.
