CAREERS PROGRAM STRUCTURE

Newman’s careers program is built around early exposure to work and flexible VET pathways.

In Year 11, students complete a work readiness program in Term 1 before moving into one day per week of work experience, alongside up to three VET subjects.

By Year 12, students reduce to one VET subject and can undertake up to two days of work experience per week. This structure allows them to balance practical learning with their final year commitments, while also working towards a Certificate III.

The college also delivers an Industry-Based Learning program, where placements are supported within class time, including managing contracts, hours, and preparation for the workplace.

STUDENT PATHWAYS

While the program has traditionally been trade-focused—across areas such as Construction, Electrotechnology, Metals Engineering, and Plumbing—there is increasing diversity in student pathways.

Students also pursue service-based industries like Hospitality and Tourism, as well as non-VET subjects including Sport, Lifestyle, and Recreation.

Through eVET, students can access TAFE courses such as Beauty, Hairdressing, and Animal Studies, attending one day per week while remaining enrolled at school.

There has also been a growing trend towards university pathways, with approximately 25 students progressing to higher education in recent years.

HOW TCD IS USED

The Careers Department is embedded primarily within the Industry-Based Learning program, where students engage in structured career development activities. These include building resumes, applying for jobs, setting goals, and exploring pathways.

It also plays an important role as a flexible alternative when students are unable to attend physical work placements—ensuring continuity in learning and exposure to industry.

KEY FEATURES USED

The Careers Department has helped broaden students’ career awareness beyond their initial plans. Many students enter with fixed ideas about their future, but through exposure to different industries and roles, they begin to explore alternative pathways.

For students who are unsure, the platform provides a structured way to discover options—hearing directly from industry and engaging with relevant content to support decision-making.
